Kiska (Female, 47 years old at time of death)
Kiska was captured in 1979 at the age of 3
She was held captive originally in Iceland, but was sold to Marineland Canada
She gave birth to 5 babies in her lifetime: Athena, Hudson, Nova, Kanuck, and one who didn't survive long enough to be named. All 5 died, leaving Kiska alone in grief and trauma
She only had brief companionship with other Orcas
Kiska died alone from a bacterial infection in 2023
There was no sanctuary to give her back her freedom
She was dubbed "The Loneliest Whale in the World"
Moana (Male, 12 years old at time of death)
Moana died in Marineland Antibes in France at only 12 years of age
He never new natural life in the ocean as he was born in captivity
One Voice had seen him display stereotypical behavior indicating severe psychological distress. This behavior is typical of Orcas and other marine animals in captivity
His death was sudden
He was the fourth Orca to die in the EU in three years
Moana is survived by his mother, Wikie, his brother Keijo, and his uncle, Inouk
Naya's Baby (less than 1 month old at time of death)
Naya's Baby was born on December 29th, 2023
She died after less than a month due to a congenital heart defect
Naya is alone in her grief and the last Orca alive at the Moskvarium in Russia
Tokitae (Female, 57 years old at time of death)
Tokitae was abducted in 1980 during the Penn Cove captures near Seattle, Washington at the age of 4
She was nicknamed Toki, a nod to her region of origin in the Salish Sea, which translates to "nice day, pretty colors"
To crowds viewing her in captivity, she was known as Lolita
She spent the rest of her life in a tiny tank at Miami Seaquarium in Florida performing circus tricks for food
The Lummi Nation began efforts to bring her home to the Salish Sea around 2018
She was being prepared for the travel home to the Sanctuary, but died before the Sanctuary was built
